Naevochromis chrysogaster is an African cichlid species that is endemic to the East African Lake Malawi .

features

The fish reach a length of 18 cm and have the typical elongated, laterally flattened body of a Haplochromis relative. The strong lower jaw protrudes and has a distinct chin. In the upper jaw the small teeth are in two rows in the lower jaw in three rows. The teeth of the outer rows have one, two or three points. There is a clear gender dimorphism . Females have a rounded dorsal fin and are light gray to brass colored. A dark, somewhat faded diagonal stripe runs through three dark spots from the "nape" to the tail stalk. Depending on the mood, the stripe can also disappear and only the three spots remain visible. The fins are transparent. In the males the bluish dorsal fin is pointed out. The head and forehead are blue, the sides of the body yellowish to slightly orange. The ends of the scales are blue. The belly is yellow (type epithet chrysogaster = Gr .: “chrysos” = gold + “gastēr” = belly). On the slightly bluish caudal fin, orange stripes run along the fin rays . The anal fin tapers to a point. It is dark and has numerous golden yellow egg spots . The pelvic fins have a white leading edge.

Way of life

Naevochromis chrysogaster is widespread and occurs mainly in the rocky biotopes of Lake Malawi, but is relatively rare. As a pedophage , the species feeds on eggs and larvae of other cichlids. Like almost all cichlids of Lake Malawi is Naevochromis chrysogaster a mouthbrooders .
