Naftule's Dream

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naftule's Dream is an American klezmer band founded in 1995 and operating out of Boston . "With her gripping combination of electrifying jazz-rock improvisations and traditional klezmer", she made , according to Wolf Kampmann , "an essential contribution to the assimilation of klezmer music in the jazz repertoire ."

The group, named after the influential klezmer pioneer Naftule Brandwein , emerged from the Shirim Klezmer Orchestra in 1995 , which continues to exist in parallel with the same line-up and is dedicated to traditional klezmer. In addition to clarinetist Glenn Dickson (who is a student of Joe Maneri ), the band consists of trombonist David Harris, keyboardist Michael McLaughlin, guitarist Pete Fitzpatrick, tuba player James Gray and drummer Eric Rosenthal. Naftule's Dream initially caused a stir with appearances at the Knitting Factory in New York and at the international Ashkenaz Festival of New Jewish Culture in Toronto; she has also performed at the JazzFest Berlin and the Jazz Summit in Graz. Her albums Search for the Golden Dreydl ( Tzadik 1996), Smash, Clap (1997) and Job (2001) are, according to Kampmann, "among the classics of the New Klezmer movement." This was followed by the album Live in Florence (Innova 2002) .
