Nail care products are partly decorative cosmetics , but also serve to clean and keep the nails healthy .

Commonly used are nail cleaner (usual skin emulsions), nail water (used to treat brittle nails, z. B. with alum ), nail oils, nail creams, cuticle removers (solution of potassium hydroxide in glycerol ), nail polish, nail lacquers ( nitrocellulose lacquer solutions with the solvents acetone , diethyl ether or / and methyl acetate and various plasticizers ) and nail polish remover (made from acetone, ethyl acetate or ethanol ).

Nail hardener

With the help of a nail hardener, brittle nails should be cosmetically corrected. This makes the nails smoother, more beautiful and more resistant by smoothing out unevenness and filling cracks. The water absorption is also reduced and the water release increased, which gives the nail more hold.

Nail hardeners can contain up to 2% hydrogen peroxide and up to 5% formaldehyde . However, nail hardeners containing formaldehyde should not be used on sick, allergic, irritated or cracked skin, as formaldehyde is irritating to the skin. Salts are mostly used to harden nails, as they react with the keratin present in the nail and thereby increase the strength of the nail.

Cuticle Softener

With the help of a cuticle softener, the keratin present in the nail is to be softened in the nail so that the cuticle can then be removed more easily.

This can be done, for example, with warm water and a few drops of triethanolamine added . Commercially available removers are mostly aqueous solutions with a strong alkaline reaction. These usually contain 1–5% potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide , which is dissolved in water. These agents also contain, for example, magnesium aluminum silicate or glycerol as thickening agents.
