Nahan ( Hindi नहान Nahān ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh .
Nahan is the administrative seat of the Sirmaur district . In the 2011 census, the population was 28,899. Of these, 79.4% were Hindus , 13.7% Muslim and 5.8% Sikhs . The city lies at an altitude of 874 m on a ridge of the Siwaliks .
Nahan was founded in 1621 as the capital of the princely state of Sirmur .
