Naica is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The population was 2326 in the 1910 census , and 4938 in 2010 according to the INEGI .

The name Naica probably comes from the Raramuri language and derives from nai 'place, place, spot' and ka 'shadow', consequently means something like shady place . Other sources translate the name with place without water .

The city is best known for the Naica mine . During the course of the mining activity in these mines, caves with exceptionally large crystals have been discovered. The Cueva de los Cristales ("Cave of Crystals") contains gypsum crystals up to 14 meters long and weighing 50 tons . These are considered to be the largest crystals known on earth. The caves were originally filled with sulphate- rich water that was only pumped out in connection with mining. Because of the heat there, which can be traced back to magmatic activity in the subsurface of the mine-cave system, driving through the caves by humans is strenuous and technically demanding.
