features

Macroscopic features

Alder catkins live on dead, on the ground inflorescences of the alder (alder catkins). The stalked fruiting bodies are 0.3-1 cm in size. Their shape is initially deep bowl-like, but can also spread out in the shape of a disk with age. The edges are finely flaky to serrated. The color is beige to pale brownish. Their stems are short when the kittens are on the ground, but can get up to 4 cm long as the kittens are often buried. They are often curved, elastic, and tapering towards the base. The color is paler than that of the apothecia .

The spores are colorless, smooth, elliptical-egg-shaped and sometimes appear almost diamond-shaped. They are 8-10.5 µm long and 5-6.5 µm wide. The tubes are cylindrical-club-shaped and measure 100–120 µm in length and 7–9 µm in width. The filamentous paraphyses have a 4–6.5 μm wide, club-shaped widened tip.

Species delimitation

The alder cone cup ( Ciboria viridifusca ) occurs on alder cones .

ecology

The species grows on dead and fallen alder kittens from the previous year. However, the old inflorescences are often buried, partly badly decomposed and blackened by the fungus. The fungus is quite common in alder hives and appears from around February to May. It is also common on hazelnut kittens. The alder kitten mug was also found on kittens from various pastures ( sal willow , ash willow ).
