The sclerotia cup relatives (Sclerotiniaceae) form a family of fungi within the order of the Helotiales . Many species in this family are pests of plants .

features

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum on common bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris )

The sclerotia cup relatives are characterized by the sclerotium , a rounded, bulbous or disc-shaped structure from which the fruiting body ( apothecium ) arises. The ascospores are unicellular and hyaline . Anamorphs that develop macroconidia are common. But anamorphs with microconidia are also known. All species also produce the 36 kDa SSP1 protein, which is responsible for the development of the sclerotium. In all species there is an antibody cross-reaction with SSP antibodies. While the protein can be found in all phases of the sclerotium and also in the apothecia, the associated SSP1 gene is only expressed in the developing sclerotium tissue.

ecology

Sclerotiniaceae are found worldwide. Most of the species are necrotrophic or opportunistic parasites on various plants. These include important pests such as gray mold rot , clover shrimp or monilia .

Systematics

Herbert Hice Whetzel set up the family for species with inoperculate asci and pediculated apothecia , which either a stromatized d. H. blackened host tissue or a sclerotium. Holst-Jensen and authors, however, separated the species that stromatized the host tissue after molecular biological studies and placed them in the new family Stromabecherverwandte (Rutstroemiaceae).

The following genera belong to the family of sclerotia cup relatives:

The genera Stromabecher ( Rutstroemia ), Stromakelche ( Lanzia ), Poculum , Verpatinia and certain types of Braunsporstroma mushrooms ( Lambertella ) are assigned to the Stromabecher relatives .
