The Stromabecher ( Rutstroemia ) are a genus of fungi in the Stromabecher family with around ten species in Central Europe. The scientific generic name honors the Swedish scientist Carl Birger Rutström , member of the Swedish Academy .
features
The fruiting bodies are long-stalked, cup-shaped apothecia and arise individually or in groups from the stromatized plant tissue. The outer excipulum of the apothecia has angular to prismatic cells with a significant layer of gelatinized hyphae. Their consistency is therefore quite firm and tough. The spores are septate and multicellular when ripe. Small secondary pores are often pinched off at the ends. The Ascus-Porus turns purple in Lugol's solution . No sclerotia are formed.
ecology
The Stromabecher colonize dead plant tissue, which they stromatize and thereby blacken. Species on dead wood, leaf stems or on fruit peels are known, but the fruits themselves are never colonized.
Systematics
Some authors put the species in the similar genus Ciboria . Today it is placed in a separate family, the Stromabecherverwandten (Rutstroemiaceae). The type species is Rutstroemia firma .
