features

Macroscopic features

The stalked, cup-shaped apothecia grow on dead alder cones , are yellowish to olive-brown and are 1 to 3 mm wide. The stalk becomes 2–25 mm long and 0.7–1.5 mm wide.

Microscopic features

The spores are smooth, unseptate and elliptical and have 1–2 oil droplets. They are 7.8 to 10.6 × 4.2 to 5.58 μm in size. The asci measure 110 to 140 × 7 to 10 μm. The paraphyses are filiform with a club-shaped widened tip.

ecology

Alder cones grows saprophytically exclusively on dead female inflorescences and the cones of alder. The uvula are “stromatized”, ie, the hyphae run through them and blacken them. The fungus fructifies in autumn. It often shares this very specific habitat with another ascomycete : the alder cone soft cup ( Mollisia amenticola ), which forms sessile , whitish, gray or cream-colored fruiting bodies. The alder kitten mug ( Ciboria amentacea ) occurs exclusively on male alder cats .

Occurrence

Due to the few finds, it is difficult to specify a distribution area. According to the GBIF portal, only 21 sites are listed worldwide that are in Scandinavia, Germany and Great Britain. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the occurrence roughly coincides with the occurrence of the black alder . The photo shown comes from Asturias , Spain . In Austria he is known from Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria. There is also evidence from Berlin, Great Britain and Bulgaria. Presumably the alder cone cup is very often overlooked due to its small size.
