Franz von Höhnel

Franz Xaver Rudolf Ritter von Höhnel (born September 24, 1852 in Zombor , Batschka , † November 11, 1920 in Vienna ) was an Austrian botanist and university professor . He was rector of the Vienna University of Technology . Its botanical abbreviation is Höhn.

Life

Franz von Höhnel studied at the Technical University and the University of Vienna and in 1874 passed the teaching examination for mathematics, geography and natural history. He then worked as assistant to Friedrich Haberlandt at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences .

In 1877 he received his doctorate from the University of Strasbourg at Anton de Bary to Dr. phil. with a dissertation on the negative air pressure in the vessels of the plants , which he proved experimentally. From 1877 to 1880 he was assistant to the forest meteorological test management at the Mariabrunn Forest Academy . In 1879 he qualified as a professor for botany at the Vienna University of Technology. From 1878 he was a lecturer, in 1884 he received the title of associate professor at the Technical University of Vienna, from 1888 he was a real associate professor for technical microscopy and merchandise . In 1894 he was appointed full professor of plant anatomy and plant physiology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, but in 1895 he returned to the technical university as full professor of botany, microscopy and technical goods science. In the academic year 1905/06 he was elected rector of the Vienna University of Technology .

From 1904 he was a corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences .

Von Höhnel discovered the phelloid, constructed new microscopic apparatus and new microscopic analysis methods and introduced technical microscopy as an official subject at the Austrian technical universities. In the 1890s he turned to mycology , revised the fungal system and established around 250 new genera and 500 new species. He undertook research trips to North Africa, Asia Minor, Brazil, North America, Ceylon and Java, among others.

Franz von Höhnel died in 1920 at the age of 68 and was buried in Vienna's central cemetery. His brother was the naval officer, Africa explorer and geographer Ludwig von Höhnel .
