Nakarai Tōsui

Nakarai Tōsui ( Japanese 半 井 桃 水 ; born January 12, 1861 in Tsushima , † November 20, 1926 in Tsuruga ) was a Japanese novelist . His childhood name was Sentarō ( 泉 太郎 ). Later he took the name Kiyoshi , minor form Retsu , (both written: ).

Life

He spent his childhood in a Japanese settlement in Busan , Korea . In Tokyo he attended the Kyōritsugakusha school. During a subsequent visit to Korea again, he reported to the local Asahi newspaper about a military uprising in Seoul . After returning to Japan, he began working as a journalist for the Asahi newspaper in Tokyo in 1888, and in this capacity also reported on scenes of the Russo-Japanese War . During his employment as a journalist, he also wrote newspaper novels, which, however, were of little literary importance. He gained fame as a teacher of Higuchi Ichiyōs , who fell in love with him.
