Nanook ( Greenlandic Nanoq / Nanu : polar bear ) is a Greenlandic music band .

history

The band was founded by the two brothers Christian and Frederik Elsner from Nanortalik , who, along with their parents Ejvind and Marianne, own the music label Atlantic Music , which is Greenland's largest label. Frederik is also one of the most successful badminton players in the country.

The two brothers first appeared in 2005 when they wrote the soundtrack of the same name for Christian's short film Inuup Tarraa ( German  The Shadow of a Man ). The film was screened at the 2007 Toronto Worldwide Short Film Festival .

The following year they gave their first concert at the Atlantic Music Festival in Nuuk , with Ib Uldum and Martin Zinck from the band Disko Democratic Republic joining them.

Another year later the four released their debut album Seqinitta Qinngorpaatit ( German  Our sun shines on you ), which was recorded in the summer in Denmark with the music producer Mik S. Christensen , with Mads Røn becoming a member of the band. In 2010 the band was awarded the annual prize by the Danish collecting society Koda for their album, which shortly afterwards achieved gold status in Greenland with 5,000 records sold .

In 2011 the film Qaqqat alanngui ( German  In the shadow of the mountain ) was shot under the direction of Malik Kleist , which contained two songs by Nanook: In addition to Seqinitta Qinngorpaatit , Ingerlaliinnaleqaagut ( German  Let us disappear together ).

In the same year the band released their second album Ai Ai ( German  sound of joy ), which received silver status within half a year . Urdum and Zinck then left the band.

In 2012 the band released the song Nilliasa ( German  Ruf es ), which was part of an anti-child abuse campaign.

In 2013 the release of a third album Nanook , which was released on Mermaid Records in Denmark and which contained reprocessed earlier songs. At the same time, the band's own concert was released as a film and a documentary.

Just one year later, another album was released with Pissaaneqaqisut ( German  Die Mächtigen ), this time again on the family label. In 2015, Nanook received another award from Koda for this album.

In 2016 the band became the first in Greenland to release an album in Japan . Ai included various singles from previous albums and a new song with Japanese translation.

In 2018 the band released their fourth album, Ataasiusutut Misigissuseq , after touring Iceland .

The band has performed in Greenland, Denmark, Iceland , Norway , Finland , the Faroe Islands , the United States , Canada and Japan and has sold 15,000 records. In addition, some songs were shown in the television series Flying Wild Alaska on the Discovery Channel .
