Disko Democratic Republic , GDR for short , is a Greenlandic rock band .

The band was founded by three brothers Simon, Anda and Ib Uldum from Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island . In 2002, while they were recording their first album Siulleq in the Atlantic Music studio in Nuuk , Martin Zinck joined the band as drummer. In 2003 Disko Democratic Republic went on tour in Greenland and was awarded the Årets Pris at the 2003 KODA Awards. This was also noted in Denmark and the Faroe Islands and the Roskilde Festival showed interest in an invitation from GDR for the 2004 edition.

In 2004 the second album, again recorded in Greenlandic , was released, Kaar! As a result of her performance at the Nuuk Festival , producer Joshua recommended her for the protestsange.dk project . Disko Democratic Republic was invited to Denmark and recorded a cover version of the song Kap Farvel til Ũmánarssuaq by the Danish band Gasolin ' there in 2005 , which was released on a compilation of several young Danish bands.

In 2011, GDR recorded the election song of Demokraatit for the 2011 folk election . In 2012 the band broke up with Atlantic Music .

The four band members are also connected to the Greenlandic music scene beyond the GDR: In addition to his political career, Anda Uldum is also known as the singer of the children's CD Angakkuakkatut , Simon was employed as a technician and producer at Atlantic Music and briefly managed his own label, Ib Uldum and Martin Zinck performed with several other local music groups, were members of Nanook and sometimes went on tour.
