Naphtali Heart Imber

Naphtali Herz Imber (also: Naftali), (born 1856 in Złoczów , Galicia , Austrian Empire ; died October 8, 1909 in Manhattan , New York , USA) was a Jewish poet. His poem HaTikwa (Hope) became the text of the Israeli national anthem.

Life

Naphtali Herz Imber went to Palestine as secretary to Laurence Oliphant in 1882 , moved to England after his death in 1888 and finally lived impoverished in the United States from 1892. His body was reburied in Jerusalem in 1953 .

Imber probably wrote Hatikwa in 1878, and it was published in his poetry collection Barkai (Morning Star) in 1886 .
