Narcisse Berchère (born September 11, 1819 in Étampes , † September 20, 1891 in Asnières-sur-Seine ) was a French orientalist painter and engraver.

Life

Narcisse Berchère studied at the École des beaux-arts in Paris with Charles-Caïus Renoux and in the studio of Jean-Charles-Joseph Rémond . In 1847 he visited Provence and went on a study trip to Spain . From 1849 to 1850 he visited Egypt , Asia Minor and the Greek archipelago and sent his first paintings from Greece to the Salon de Paris . In 1856 he returned to Egypt and crossed the Sinai desert with his friend Léon Belly . The two men, accompanied by Jean-Léon Gérôme and Auguste Bartholdi , then hiked up the Nile Valley from July to October 1856. In 1860 Ferdinand de Lesseps commissioned Berchère to depict the various sections of the Suez Canal. At this time, Berchère sent many letters to the writer and oriental painter Eugène Fromentin , which were published in 1863. In 1869 he was invited to the inauguration of the Suez Canal . After many years in North Africa and the Middle East, Berchère settled in Asnières-sur-Seine.
