Narcotic Wasteland is an American technical and brutal death metal band from Taylors , South Carolina that was formed in 2011.

history

The group began as a side project of guitarist and singer Dallas Toler-Wade. Toler-Wade had known the guitarist and singer Edwin "Ed" Rhone since 1991 due to jam sessions and a joint band activity, through which they had become friends. In 2011 the bassist and singer Chris “Lutachrist” Dupre was added by Rhone, which led to the formation of Narcotic Wasteland. For the next two years the band searched for a suitable drummer, whom they found in Erik Schultek through a recommendation from Nile drummer George Kollias . After a self-titled debut album was released in 2014, Schultek left the band that same year. A short time later he was replaced by Phil Cancilla, a Facebook friend of Schulteks, after a short audition for Toler-Wade. The latter stepped out of his then main band Nile in October 2016 and now concentrated more on Narcotic Wasteland. After negotiating with several record companies, the group signed a contract with Megaforce Records . About this the second album Delirium Tremens was released on October 13, 2017 , on which the line-up consists of Dupre, Rhone and Cancilla in addition to Toler-Wade. Four of the twelve songs had been written by Toler-Wade before he left Nile, while the other eight had been completed by him between early 2017 and March of that year. The album was recorded at Vegas View Recording and at Toler-Wade's home studio. It was then mixed by Neil Kernon and mastered by Alan Douches at West Side Music . A tour of North America began on October 21, 2017 in Greenville , South Carolina, with performances in approximately 20 cities, and ended on December 9, 2017 in Orlando , Florida . This represented the first tour of the group. During the tour, the group played partly together with Dreaming Dead and Extinction Level Event.

style

Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard described the music of Delirium Tremens as technically demanding death metal , reminiscent of that of Nile, although Narcotic Wasteland is broader. The group is mainly based on the style of the 1990s, but also thinks outside the box. The texts would mostly deal with drug addiction and abuse. In an interview with him, Toler-Wade stated that for him the music is just metal and that he only plays what moves him emotionally. Patrick Schmidt had reviewed the album an issue earlier and characterized the music as brutal and technically demanding Death Metal. The songs sound influenced by Suffocation , Misery Index and Dying Fetus , but lack something innovative. Thematically, one deals with the drug wave that is currently rolling over the USA. The songs are usually very fast, but they often lack structure. Stephan Möller from Metal.de also called the music “technically brutal Death Metal” and compared it to Nile, only without Karl Sanders . Even when dealing with drugs, Narotic Wasteland is not a stoner metal band. Furthermore, lyrically and musically - in contrast to Nile - topics such as Egyptology and HP Lovecraft are foregone . This made the songs more straightforward and direct than with Nile.
