Nasmyth is an impact crater on the southwestern edge of the lunar front , south of the great whale plain of the Schickard , east of Wargentin and north of Phocylides , which overlays the southern part of Nasmyth. The rim of the crater is eroded and the interior, like the neighboring craters, is filled with lava.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Scottish engineer and astronomer James Nasmyth .
