Phocylides is an impact crater on the southwestern edge of the lunar front , south of the great whale plain of the Schickard and southeast of Wargentin . Its northern part partially covers the nearby Nasmyth crater . The rim of the crater is eroded with traces of terracing , the interior is lava-filled and flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Frisian astronomer Johannes Phocylides Holwarda .
