Natale Evola

Natale "Joe Diamond" Evola (born February 22, 1907 in New York City , † August 28, 1973 in New York City) was an Italian-American professional criminal and brief leader of the Bonanno family of La Cosa Nostra in New York City.

Natale Evola was in the district of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn born, New York City, the son of Philip and Francesca Evola. His parents came from Castellammare del Golfo , Sicily . Natale Evola had two brothers (Paul and Joseph Evola) and three sisters (Anna Evola, Josephine DiBarloto and Mamie Grazzo).

He got into the criminal life early and served his way up in the Mafiaclan Bonanno. Evola's criminal record included illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking and extortion of protection money. He mainly worked in the Garment District, Manhattan.

Evola had a close and trusting relationship with Joseph Bonanno , boss and namesake of the Bonanno family. In 1957 he took part in the so-called Apalachin Meeting .

In 1959 he was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for drug smuggling for smuggling drugs from Sicily to the United States on a large scale.

His family boss Joe Bonanno tried to expand his power, which led to the fact that the "Mafia Commission" (the supreme council of the US Mafia) deposed him. Bonanno first tried to defend himself against it, but from 1968 had to finally withdraw. The Commission appointed Paul Sciacca as his successor. Evola served as an " underboss " until 1971 and was his successor in 1971.

As the new boss, Evola worked closely with the Genovese family and Carlo Gambino and his Gambino family .

On August 28, 1973, Natale Evola died of cancer at Columbus Hospital in the Bronx . He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens .
