Nathan Gershman

Nathan "Nat" Gershman (born November 29, 1917 in Philadelphia as Nathan Gerschman; † September 13, 2008 in North Hollywood ) was an American cellist who worked in both jazz and classical music .

Gershman, whose brother is the violinist Paul Gershman , studied classical music at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia between 1936 and 1940 . From 1940 to 1947 he played in the Cleveland Orchestra and then went to New York City as a studio musician ; In 1954 he moved to Los Angeles. In 1957 he replaced the cellist Fred Katz in the Chico Hamilton quintet , in which he stayed until 1961 and participated in various albums and tours. Gershman then went back to working in the Hollywood studios. As a studio musician, he recorded with Esther Phillips as well as Lee Hazlewood and the Beach Boys . He can also be heard on albums by Wayne Henderson , Neil Diamond , David Axelrod , Ronnie Laws , Geronimo Black Van Dyke Parks and Masterfleet .
