Nathan Hill (* 1978 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa ) is an American writer whose first novel The Nix was published in 2016.

Life

Hill grew up in the American Midwest and later lived in New York and New England . He earned a BA in English and Journalism from the University of Iowa and a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst .

After working as a journalist on newspapers and magazines, Hill went to the Academy of American Poets . He then taught at Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Hill published short stories in various literary magazines and finally his first novel, which was published in 2016 under the title "Geister" in German and 19 other translations. The novel, widely acclaimed by literary critics and awarded the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the “First Work” category in 2016, describes American society, especially during the unrest of 1968 in Chicago against the backdrop of the Democratic nomination convention and the 2011 primaries in the context of a fictitious right-wing populist candidate for the Republican presidential candidacy .

Hill is on leave from university to devote himself to writing and lives in Naples, Florida.
