For the opening of her last season 05/06 at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, the artistic director Anna Badora had put the original version of Nathan on the program. In the same season she also staged the new version of Zaimoglu / Senkel.
Zaimoglu is reported to have always considered Lessing's drama, which he often had to work on as a commissioned work, as with his plays, as a “old wives' tale”. The relocation of the plot to Jerusalem then made a contemporary reflection possible, on which the writer worked with "increasing enthusiasm".
That “Lessing and Al Qaida meet, as it were,” said Gerhard Stadelmaier in 2006 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about the play.
For the performance of the play in Berlin (Ballhaus Naunynstraße) in 2009 under the direction of Neco Celik, the Capital City Culture Fund awarded 70,000 euros in grants in July 2008, making the production, which was designed as an intercultural theater project, the most heavily supported spoken theater play in the year in question.
