The National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( 中国科学院国家天文台 , English National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences , abbreviated NAOC) are an association of research institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences , based in Beijing , District Chaoyang , Datun-Str. 20a.

history

On April 16, 1999, the Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to combine its astronomical facilities under one roof. For this purpose, a "National Center for Astronomical Observations" (国家 天文 观测 中心) was founded six days later, on April 23, 1999, at the headquarters of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory on Datun Street. On May 19, 1999, Ai Guoxiang (艾 国祥, * 1938), the director of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory, appointed head of the center. The actual NAOC was established on April 21, 2001 through the merger of five observatories (Beijing Astronomical Observatory, Shanghai Astronomical Observatory , Observatory on the Purple Mountain , Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, Shaanxi Astronomical Observatory ), three observation stations ( Ürümqi Astronomical Station , Changchun Satellite Observatory , Guangzhou Satellite Observation Station ) and the Center for Astronomical Measuring Instruments of the Academy of Sciences in Nanjing , Ai Guoxiang remained director until July 2007. State-funded astronomy in China was thus given a structure that is similar to that in the United States and Japan, for example. There, too, the observation stations are merged to form a joint institute, but in the USA they are separated into optical and radio astronomy.
