The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party ( NDPP , "Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party") is a regional party founded in 2017 in the Indian state of Nagaland .

Party history

The NDPP was created on May 17, 2017 under the name Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as a split from the Naga People's Front (NPF). A leadership conflict between the supporters of the previous party chairman Neiphiu Rio and the supporters of a faction under Chief Minister TR Zeliang had preceded the NPF . Neiphiu Rio lost the party chairmanship, but initially remained - even after the formation of the DPP - NPF party member. Some of his supporters from the NPF formed a new party.

The new party held its founding congress on May 17, 2017 in Dimapur (Nagaland). The former NPF MP Chingwang Konyak became the first party chairman. In a press release it was said that the party was founded to meet the "desire of the masses who are strongly demanding the formation of a new political organization". In terms of program, the new party remained relatively vague and promised to strive for the “realization of a real peace process” in Nagaland, as well as to work “for democracy, against corruption, violence and injustice”. The party chose facta, non verba (“deeds, not words”) as its motto or motto . The Indian Election Commission recognized the new party on October 20, 2017 as "registered party" ( registered party ) and on April 17, 2018 as "federal party" ( state party ) in Nagaland.

On January 18, 2018, Neiphiu Rio resigned from the NPF and officially became a member of the NDPP and at the same time its top candidate in the upcoming election to the parliament of Nagaland. In the election on February 27, 2018, the NDPP won 16 of the 60 constituency mandates in Nagaland's parliament and was able to form a coalition government with the help of coalition partners (in particular the Bharatiya Janata Party , BJP). On March 6, 2018, Neiphiu Rio was appointed Chief Minister in Nagaland. Neiphiu Rio made his Lok Sabha - constituency mandate back, and Tokheho Yepthomi won the constituency in a by-election for the NDPP.

In the run-up to the upcoming all- India parliamentary election , the position of the NDPP in Nagaland was strengthened by dissidents from other parties. After an alliance of the NDPP, BJP, National People's Party (NPP), Janata Dal (United) and an independent MP was formed on March 20, 2019 and an agreement was reached on the support of a consensus candidate (Tokheho Yepthomi, NDPP) in the election the following day two members of the NPP in the parliament of Nagaland joined the NDPP. On March 26, 2019, seven NPF MPs in Nagaland's parliament declared that they also wanted to support the NDPP candidate. This won the Lok Sabha constituency of Nagaland in the election on April 11, 2019.
