The National Museum of Military History (Portuguese: Museu Nacional de História Militar ) is located in the São Miguel Fortress in the center of Luanda . It deals with the military struggles for independence from Angola .

In the fortress built in 1575 by the first Portuguese governor of Angola, Paulo Dias de Novais , the Central Museum of the Angolan Armed Forces (Museu Central das Forças Armadas) was established on July 31, 1978 . For decades it was in a desolate state. On April 4, 2013, the National Museum of Military History opened after extensive renovation .

Military vehicles of the three liberation movements MPLA , FNLA and UNITA as well as the South African army , the fuselage of the Mirage fighter aircraft of the South African air force , artillery parts and military aircraft of the type T-6 of the Portuguese armed forces are shown, along with other American, Russian, Italian and British war material.

National flag

A special attraction is the gigantic flag of 18 × 12 m on a 75 m high mast with a weight of 75 tons, at the top of which there is an aeronautical signal light. The amount refers to the year of the country's independence. The flag is hoisted on 12 occasions a year.
