The Brüggen Nature and Animal Park is a zoo with an extensive play and leisure area in Brüggen, North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located around two kilometers north of the town center, west of federal highway 221 , around four kilometers from the Dutch border. Its animal population, which is made up of roughly equal parts of mammals, birds and various snakes, includes around 50 species.

history

Wilhelm Kerren, owner of a machine factory, opened the park, at that time an enclosure for fallow deer and ponies, on May 1st, 1958. After selling his Kerma factory , he expanded the zoo and equipped it with imaginative play equipment, which he manufactured in his locksmith's shop . He died in 1979. The zoo remained a family business, since 2008 Wilhelm Kerren's grandson Stephan Kerren and his wife Helga Kerren have run it.

In 2011, a snake house opened in a converted former residential building in the nature and animal park. It was created on the initiative of the Düsseldorf professional firefighter Michael Harzbecker. The building serves as a catchment station for - often poisonous - snakes that are caught by the fire brigade, as well as a training place for handling snakes.

In 2018, the keeping of collar bears in confined spaces was abandoned. The last remaining bear, Antonella , was brought to the Alternative Wolf and Bear Park in the Black Forest, where she lived for another four months under the name Chadna . The system in Brüggen was then adapted for Korsaks .

The last zebra was also released in 2019 . Since then, the zoo's logo shows three meerkats instead of the two zebras.

Livestock

In its publications, the Brüggen Nature and Zoo emphasizes keeping animals from five continents. To find include emus and Bennett kangaroos (Australia), axis deer , blackbuck and Bactrian camels (Asia), meerkats , Watusi cattle and Dahomey Dwarf Cattle (Africa) and guanacos , Great Maras , rheas , squirrel monkeys and blue-fronted Amazons (South America). For the continent of Europe there are various forms of domestic animals such as sheep ( Heidschnucke ) or geese ( domestic goose ). The snake house is home to around 15 species of snakes .

Leisure area

In the eastern area of the park there is a playground with various climbing and play equipment, a monorail and an electric horse riding track. There is a mini golf course in the central parking area.

public perception

In a not undisputed ranking of 158 zoological institutions in Germany, which is based exclusively on the average value of Google reviews, the Brüggen Nature and Zoo came 154th in 2019.
