Natural monuments in South Tyrol

The protection and maintenance of natural monuments in South Tyrol are the responsibility of the Nature, Landscape and Spatial Development department of the South Tyrolean regional administration.

Individual natural objects that are significant because of their uniqueness and rarity or their character which characterize the landscape are designated as natural monuments . The state administration distinguishes between three classes: geological natural monuments (such as gorges , earth pyramids , rock formations, boulders ), botanical natural monuments (such as individual trees or other plants, groups of trees) and hydrological natural monuments (such as waterfalls, lakes, glaciers ).
