The Surö nature reserve (Swedish name Surö bokskog ) is located a few kilometers south of the town of Sjötorp in the Swedish municipality of Mariestad and part of the European Natura 2000 network . It covers an area of 19.4 hectares.
Surö is considered Europe's northernmost beech forest . However, it is not a naturally grown forest, but studies have shown that the beech forest was planted around 1700. In addition to beeches, there are also other deciduous trees such as oak , aspen , birch , elm and linden on Surö.
