The Apfelwörth nature reserve is one of the largest and most important nature reserves in Swabia . It is located near Blindheim and covers an area of 188 hectares.
Apfelwörth is a remnant of the once wildly flowing Danube . By straightening the river, parts were cut off that developed into still waters rich in vegetation. In addition, artificially created backwaters, created by intensive gravel mining, enrich the wetland. This is particularly inhabited by rare and endangered (over 70) bird species that also breed there. These include u. a. the little bittern , teal duck and the reed warbler .
Apfelwörth is also part of the European bird sanctuary Donauauen and Donauried between Höchstadt and Donauwörth .
Swimming is strictly forbidden in the entire nature reserve, and fishing is only allowed at certain times.
