The nature reserve Walheim is in the area of the city of Aachen , east of the city center of Walheim and surrounds the so-called "Freizeitgelände Walheim", which is itself designated as a landscape protection area (LSG).

description

The Inde flows through the middle of the nature reserve, to the right and left are the old quarries of the former Walheim lime kiln with the Kalkofenweg . The soil is of Middle Devonian limestone . In the northeast is an old quarry with dry grass on the flat slopes and on the quarry edges. In the quarry itself, the vegetation is patchy. In places, bushes have started to grow. At the deepest point, a lake has formed, partly shallow, partly several meters deep. Floating pondweed , flutter and limb bulrush and pond ledges can be found in the water . On both sides of the Inde there is a hornbeam forest resulting from coppice forest management . Some parcels are afforested with spruce . An alder - ash forest grows alongside . To the northwest is another quarry with high rock walls, similar in terms of vegetation to the other quarry. To the south a larger lake has formed in a quarry with vegetation similar to that in the northeast.

Protection purpose

In this protected area, the development of communities of wild animals and plants is to be preserved. The tall herbaceous and pioneer societies on limestone gravel with pre-forest stages of heat-loving shrubs are interesting . All of this results in a biodiversity with rich bird life, with amphibians and reptiles . Scientific and geological reasons are important for preservation because of the rarity and peculiarity of this geological monument. The still waters in the area have a high pH value with typical plants and animals.
