Nature reserve and biogenetic reserve Karlstifter Moore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Große Heide is the largest of the five sub-moors of the Karlstifter Moore nature reserve.

The nature reserve and biogenetic reserve Karlstifter Moore comprises five sub-areas in the area of Karlstift (municipality of Bad Großpertholz ). These five high moor areas or parts of them (Sepplau, Große Heide, Kleine Heide, southern Wurzelsteigmoor and Lattenwegau) were designated as the “Karlstifter Moore” nature reserve in 1981. The area was given in 1998 with 64.1 ha and currently with 61.1 ha.

In 1989 the Council of Europe designated the moorland as a biogenetic reserve. The reserve area is given as 64.1 ha.

Peat types and meaning

The nature reserve areas are sour oligotrophic rain bogs, which are almost entirely made up of bog spikes ( Pinus mugo subsp. Rotundata) , a special form of mountain pine (Pinus mugo) . Two of these bogs were placed in the highest category "of international importance".

Characteristic flora and fauna

The following are named as characteristic elements of flora and fauna:

Auerhuhn (Tetrao urogallus) , grouse (Tetrao tetrix syn. Lyrurus tetrix) , viper (Vipera berus) , bog-beetles (carabus menetriesi ssp. Pacholei) , Colias Palaeno (Colias palaeno) , plebejus optilete (Plebejus optilete) , rosemary (Andromeda polifolia) , dwarf birch (Betula nana) , round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) , seven star (Trientalis europaea) , common cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos) , different types of peat moss such as Sphagnum fallax , Sphagnum fuscum , Sphagnum nemureum , Sphagnum nemureum , Sphagnum nemureum . a.

Protection categories

The nature reserve areas are also part of other protected areas:

  • Important Bird Area "Freiwald"
  • Natura 2000 bird sanctuary "Waldviertel"
  • FFH area "Waldviertel pond, heather and moor landscape"
  • Ramsar area "Waldviertler pond, moor and river landscape" (wetland of international importance)
  • European Green Belt.

Interventions

Drainage ditch in the Große Heide high moor.

In 2000, a study by WWF recorded the following for the sub-area Große Heide: "The Große Heide in the immediate vicinity is severely impaired by the construction of forest roads and continued effective drainage ditches, although it was also designated as a biogenetic reserve by the Council of Europe." .

In 2002 the Ramsar area, in which the Karlstifter Moore are located, was examined by the Federal Environment Agency and the results of the investigation were taken up by the Court of Auditors. The Federal Environment Agency determined "that the Karlstifter moors are being used for forestry without nature conservation requirements and that the area is sometimes over-developed for tourism." and the Court of Auditors demanded that the entire Ramsar area be designated at least as a nature reserve in order to achieve a correspondingly sustainable protection, which has not happened until today (as of May 1, 2014).

Then there were further interventions in the moorland habitats of Karlstift.
