The Waldkugel natural forest reserve is a forest area in the southeast of Würzburg that was designated as a nature reserve in 2002 . It is located between Würzburg- Heidingsfeld and Reichenberg , includes parts of the Würzburg city forest and the state forest of the municipality of Reichenberg. The area with 74.7 ha has not been used for forestry since 1999. The aim is for the forest to develop as naturally as possible and to safeguard the existing biodiversity.
geography
The natural forest reserve is a beech forest typical of the Main Franconian plate . The name Waldkugel for the reserve comes from the historical name for the largest forest section within the natural forest reserve.
Flora and fauna
Originally managed as an oak-hornbeam forest , the expansion of the red beech led to a transition to the woodruff beech forest . In addition to beech and oak, there are also sycamore and norway maples , ash and, to a lesser extent, cherry, elm , wild apple and wild pear . Service tree and service tree are to be mentioned as hardwoods .
The oak and beech stocks in particular offer woodpeckers the opportunity to create caves . With great spotted woodpecker , medium-sized woodpecker , small woodpecker , green woodpecker and black woodpecker, five species of woodpecker are represented. Former caves of black woodpeckers are used by the rare stock dove.
The natural forest reserve is also home to numerous species of snails, including the wide- mouthed glass snail and the predatory lung snail, as well as around 500 species of butterflies.
