Naugatuck State Forest is a state forest in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parishes of Oxford , Beacon Falls , Naugatuck , Bethany , Cheshire , Hamden , Seymour and Ansonia . The five parcels are named Mount Sanford (Cheshire and Bethany), East (Beacon Falls, Bethany, Naugatuck), West (Naugatuck, Oxford, Beacon Falls), Quillinan Reservoir (Seymour, Ansonia) and Great Hill (Seymour).

history

The first land purchases were made in 1921 by Harris Whittemore. Whittemore, a Connecticut State Forest and Park Commissioner and tycoon, planned to donate the forest to the state, but died in 1928 before that could be done. In 1931 Whittemore's family donated about 2,000 acres (809 ha) to the state "in memoriam" (which also included parcels that were only acquired after his death). The other parcels were added later. Great Hill Block was added recently.

The romantic valley of the Naugatuck River and Connecticut Route 8 divides the East and West blocks into Naugatuck. Most of the forest areas are in the catchment area of the Naugatuck River. The towns in the Naugatuck Valley were settled in the early 18th century and are typical of the early settlements in New England . Rivers, streams and ponds were provided with dams to generate water power for mills, tanneries and later paper mills. Many field walls mark the boundaries of the Colonial Era Farms . However, large parts of the Naugatuck State Forest are formed by rocky hills that were just poor farmland.

free time activities

Fishing, hiking, hunting, target shooting, snowmobiling, skiing, mountain biking, climbing and other outdoor activities are available in the Naugatuck State Forest. The forest parcels are crossed by various blue-blazed trails , including the Quinnipiac Trail and the Naugatuck Trail (Whittemore trail). In the Quillinan Block , the DEEP State Forester's office , the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) and the Thule Corporation have set up special mountain bike trails.
