Weinmannia is a plant genus in the family of Cunoniaceae . The 170 to 190 species occur on someislandsin the southern Indies and the Pacific , as well as in Central and South America and on some Caribbean islands .

Vegetative characteristics

The Weinmannia species grow as shrubs or trees .

The constantly against arranged on the branches leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The leaf blades are simple, unpaired pinnate or threefold, rarely two-fold. The leaf stem is often winged and early sloping side sheets can be fused together.

Generative characteristics

The Weinmannia species can be hermaphroditic, dioecious, or polygamomonoce . The lateral or terminal inflorescences are racemose and stand individually or in groups of usually two to four on a short inflorescence stem. The flowers are usually arranged in clusters on the inflorescence axis.

The relatively small flowers are radial symmetry and four or five-fold with a double flower envelope . The four or five sepals overlap each other just like the petals and are often durable. The four or five petals and the stamens are white or greenish in color. The stamen circle is divided into eight to ten lobes between which there are eight to ten stamens. The stamens are thread-like and the small anthers appear in pairs. Ovaries are either completely absent or incompletely developed in male flowers. In the two-chambered ovary the few hang up numerous ovules down from the upper part of the ovary times. The stylus is short.

The mostly small, ellipsoidal capsule fruits are bicameral. The finely hairy seeds usually have long hair at both ends and are wingless or rarely have a small, inconspicuous wing.

distribution

The distribution area of the Weinmannia species extends from Madagascar and the Mascarene Mountains through New Zealand , the Austral Islands and the Marquesas to the parts of Central and South America south of Mexico; they are also found in the West Indies . The Andes represent the main distribution of the genus Weinmannia , as there is a great diversity of species.

Weinmannia marquesana var. Angustifolia

The genus Weinmannia was established in 1759 by Carl von Linné in Systema Naturae , Volume 2, pages 997, 1005 and 1367. The type species is Weinmannia pinnata L. Synonyms for Weinmannia L. are: Arnoldia Blume , Leiospermum D.Don and Pterophylla D.Don .
