description

Branch with male flowers of Weinmannia marquesana var. Angustifolia

Vegetative characteristics

The Weinmannia marquesana grows as a shrub or small tree , rarely, as shrub , the growth heights from 0.6 to 10 meters, diameter at breast height can reach up to 35 centimeters. The branches are mostly forked. The stem-round branches have a diameter of 0.8 to 2 millimeters. The reddish brown bark is almost hairless or thickly covered with curly, felty or fine, initially pale brown hairs, which are between 0.5 and 0.9 millimeters long. The trunk bark becomes bald over time.

The simple, rarely threefold leaves are arranged opposite to each other on the branches and are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The bald to tomentose-haired and slightly winged petiole is 0.1 to 2.5 centimeters long and 0.7 to 1 millimeter thick and is initially red in color. The simple, almost leathery to leathery leaf blade is 1.6 to 10 centimeters long and 0.7 to 4.5 centimeters wide and elliptical to ovoid to obovate-elliptical. The base of the blade is wedge-shaped, blunt or truncated, the tip of the blade is pointed or pointed and the edges of the blade, which are rolled down, are finely sawn or notched. Both the top and bottom of the leaf are bare, only the middle nerve can have hairs on both sides. The early declining to persistent stipules are 0.3 to 5 millimeters long and 0.5 to 2 millimeters wide and rounded to approximately ovoid-elliptical to elliptical-tongue-shaped. Their tip is usually rounded, but can also be diamond-shaped to broadly ovoid and folded lengthways. The outside of the stipules can be curly haired or bald.

Generative characteristics

Weinmannia marquesana is unisexual or hermaphroditic. The terminal inflorescences are racemose and stand individually or in groups of three to five on a 0.8 to 6.5 centimeter long, almost bald or sparsely to densely hairy inflorescence stem. The inflorescence stem may be missing in var. Angustifolia . The inflorescences themselves are 2.5 to 12 inches long and reach 2 to 5 inches in diameter. The 25 to 40 flowers are closely arranged on the inflorescence axis.

The relatively small flowers are radial symmetry and four or five-fold with a double flower envelope and are on a 0.8 to 3 millimeter long, smooth or hairy flower stalk. With a length of up to 1.6 millimeters, the reduced bracts are tongue-shaped to keeled, but can also be absent entirely. The four or five broad, egg-shaped sepals are 0.6 to 1 millimeter long and 0.5 to 1.2 millimeters wide and overlap each other just like the petals. The four or five elongated petals are colored white and reach a length of 1 to 2 millimeters and a width of 0.7 to 1.2 millimeters. The male flowers contain eight stamens , which are twice as long as the pistil , as well as 2 to 3 millimeter long stamens and 0.4 to 0.5 millimeter long, hemispherical to egg-shaped anthers. The most hairy ovary of the male flowers is 0.6 to 0.9 millimeters in size during the stylus around 0.2 millimeters in size and is bent inwardly. In the female flowers, the stamens are about the same length as the pistil and the stamens are 0.4 to 1.2 millimeters long. The egg-shaped anthers are about 0.2 millimeters in size. The hairless female ovary is 1.1 to 1.5 millimeters long and the two styles reach a length of 0.6 to 1 millimeter. The hermaphroditic flowers have stamens 2.8 to 3.5 millimeters long and the bald to slightly curly haired ovary is between 1.5 and 2.2 millimeters in size. The stylus reaches a length of 1.2 to 1.4 millimeters.

The obovate, two-chamber capsule fruits are 3 to 7 millimeters long and between 1.5 and 2.5 millimeters thick. They are initially green and turn bright red as they mature. The surface of the fruit can be hairless or hairy. The finely hairy, brown seeds are 0.6 to 1 millimeter long and 0.25 to 0.4 millimeters thick and elongated to ovoid-elliptical. They have tufts of hair 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters long at both ends.
