Naval Gandhi

Naval Gandhi (* 1897 in Karachi , British India , † after 1952) was an Indian film director of Hindi films and producer of war documentaries.

Life

Gandhi graduated from Ahmedabad in 1919 and then went to Europe. In 1923 he found a job as a director in Ardeshir Irani's newly founded film company Majestic Films. As one of several co-directors with Irani, he shot Paap No Fej , one of the studio's most successful films , in 1924 .

His best-known work is the film adaptation of the Thakur drama Bisarjan under the title Balidan with the stars Sulochana , Zubeida and Master Vithal . This much-discussed film from 1927 was shot largely in Rajasthan and its original was advertised with the high literary quality. By 1931 Gandhi made four more films with Zubeida for the film companies Orient Pics and Kohinoor United Artists . His last and only sound film Shikari was made in 1932.

During the Second World War, Gandhi worked for the Directorate of Services Kinematography - the film division of the armed forces - where he produced documentaries for PV Pathy . In the early 1950s he was a sales manager at General Radio & Appliances Ltd. in Bombay.
