Navatu , also Tova , is a ring-shaped coral atoll in the Lau Islands archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Eastern Division of the island state of Fiji .
geography
Navatu is comparatively isolated in the Koro Sea , between the Moala Group of the Lau Islands in the west and the Southern Lau Group in the east. The closest land masses are the islands of Totoya in the southwest, Moala in the northwest and Vanua Vatu in the northeast, each around 50 km away. The atoll has dimensions of about 5 × 4 km and has a total area of 19 km². The fringing reef almost completely surrounds the up to 24 m deep lagoon and extends to the sea surface in the outer area. Depending on the tides , a height of up to 0.6 m above sea level is reached, so that Navatu represents a great danger to shipping. On July 11, 1989, the ferry Matthew Flinders ran aground here ; Crew and passengers could be saved.
