Moala is an island of volcanic origin in the southwest of the Lau Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Eastern Division of the island state of Fiji .
geography
Moala is the northernmost island in the Moala Group named after it , a group of three atolls that form the southwestern area of the Lau Archipelago. The island is located around 40 km northwest of Totoya , 55 km northeast of Matuku and 70 km southeast of Gau , the largest of the Lomaiviti Islands . Along with Matuku, Moala is the only island in the archipelago west of the 180th degree of longitude . The anvil- shaped island is 13 km long, up to 11 km wide and has an area of 62.5 km², which makes it the largest island in the Lau archipelago. It forms the volcanic central island of a comparatively young atoll and is not completely surrounded by a coral reef . The hilly island is forested and in the Delaimoala reaches a height of 468 m above sea level.

The main town of the island is Naroi in the northeast; the island's airport is also located there ( IATA code: MFJ, ICAO code: NFMO).
