The Navlakha Temple, dedicated to the sun god Surya , near the village of Ghumli on the Kathiawar / Saurashtra peninsula in the state of Gujarat is one of the most important classical Hindu temples (mandir) in northwest India .

location

The Navlakha temple is located about 1 km south of the 80  m high village Ghumli in the Bhanvad - Taluk of the Devbhumi Dwarka district at the foot of the Barda Hills . The place is located about 42 km (driving distance) northeast of the coastal town of Porbandar .

history

The temple was built in the 11th or 12th century by the then ruling Hindu Jethwa dynasty , but was destroyed by the rival Jadeja clan at the beginning of the 14th century. It was not extensively restored until the 20th century under the direction of the Archaeological Survey of India .

Architecture and decor

The temple rises on a platform ( jagati ) about 2 m high . The vestibule ( mandapa ), which has again been raised by almost 2 m, has two floors and is accessible from three sides via stairs; the fourth side is occupied by the lightless cella ( garbhagriha ) , encased by a corridor ( pradakshinapatha ) , in which the cult image is venerated. Above it rises a total of around 18 m high Shikhara tower.

The partially preserved stones in the plinth of the vestibule are decorated with figures, but often with ornamental motifs.

Surroundings

Not far away are the ruins of a Ganesha temple and two step wells (Vikia Vav and Jeta Vav) .
