Nazo Tokhi

Nazo Tokhi ( Pashtun نازو توخۍalso: Nāzo Anā * around 1651 in Spogmayiz , Kandahar province ; † around 1717 ) was an Afghan poetess from the Pashtun people , as well as a literary figure in Pashtun literature. She was the mother of Mir Wais Hotak and is considered the most courageous female warrior in the country's history and mother of the Afghan nation.

Life

Nazo Tokhi was probably born in 1651 in the village of Spozhmayiz Gul near Thazi, Kandahar Province, into a powerful and wealthy family. Her father, Sultan Malakhai Tokhi, was a well-known leader of the Tokhi tribe and governor of Ghazni . She was married to Salim Khan Hotak. Their son was Mir Wais Hotak and his sons Mir Mahmud Hotaki and Hussain Hotak were their grandchildren.

She learned to write poetry, she was a polite, loving and caring person, her father made sure that she did not neglect her education. Through her poetry and the upholding of Pashtunwali, she gained authority, she settled conflicts between the Pashtun tribes. When her father was killed in the battle near Mount Sur, her brother went to the battlefield to avenge his father's death. She was then responsible for the fortress, she drew a sword and defended the fortress alongside the other fighters.

Tokhi likely died in 1717.

It is believed that Nazo Ana had a special dream the night her son Mirwais Hotak was born: on the night Mirwais was born (1673), she is said to have had a conversation with Sheikh Bait Nīkə, who worked as a folk leader or Ancestor of the Bettani Confederation of Pashtuns is believed to be. He told Nazo that she should give him the best possible care and take plenty of time for the baby because when he grows up the country would be blessed with his services. Nazo Ana remembered the wondrous dream from time to time.
