Ndoc Suma

Dom Ndoc Suma (born July 31, 1887 in Nënshat ( Zadrima ), † April 22, 1958 ) was a Roman Catholic priest who died in communist Albania for his faith. He is one of the Thirty-Eight Martyrs of Albania .

Life

After completing his first studies at the papal seminary in Shkodra , he studied theology and philosophy in Innsbruck for two years . He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1911 in the chapel of the Salvatorian College . He celebrated his home primacy in Nënshat on September 24, 1911. He worked as pastor of Kçirë, Koman, Narac, Laç i Vaut near Dejës and Pistull.

In addition to his work as a priest, he also worked as an ethnographer, collecting and writing down Albanian fairy tales and ancient traditions.

On December 8, 1946, he was arrested during Holy Mass. He was tried on false charges and sentenced to 30 years in prison. After suffering paralysis in prison, he was released on November 27, 1954 after eight years in prison. He returned to Pistull, where he now lived in a basement room in the rectory. He held Holy Mass for the faithful in a kind of catacomb . He passed away a few years later.

beatification

Ndoc Suma was beatified along with 37 other martyrs on November 5, 2016 in Shkodra. Cardinal Angelo Amato , President of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , presided over the celebrations on behalf of Pope Francis .
