Nea Alikarnassos ( Greek Νέα Αλικαρνασσός [ ˈnɛa alikarnaˈsɔs ] ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality in the Cretan capital Heraklion . Until its incorporation on January 1, 2011, Nea Alikarnassos was an independent municipality, since 1986 as a municipality (dimos).
Location and geography
Nea Alikarnassos is located east of the center of Heraklion, in the coastal plain right by the sea. Nea Alikarnassos has grown together with the city of Heraklion.

The ruins of two Minoan houses were found near the settlement of Prassas .
Nea Alikarnassos was founded in 1925 as a state housing estate to accommodate the refugees who had been driven from their home in Halicarnassus (now Bodrum ) as a result of the catastrophe in Asia Minor and who had come to Crete in their thousands.
Localities
Nea Alikarnassos consists of the town of the same name and the town of Kalithea with the beach settlement Karteros named after the river.

Parties
In elections, there is a clearly predominant part of the left. In the 2007 parliamentary elections, the social democratic PASOK achieved 52.85% (2004: 54.54%), the conservative Nea Dimokratia 31.22% (2004: 33.84%), the communist KKE 8.97% (2004: 8, 00%), the left SYRIZA 3.15% (2004: 2.14%), the right LAOS 1.61% (2004: 1.07%) and the Greens 1.19%.
mayor
Mayor was Evangelos Sisamakis (PASOK) from 2003 to 2010. He was re-elected in 2006 with 63% of the vote in the first ballot.
The disputes over the "gypsy camp"
For years, a camp in which over 500 Roma - for whom the name tsingani ( Greek τσιγγάνοι or αθιγγάνοι is common in Greek ) - have been living in poor conditions has caused major problems and disputes . It was set up in an area between the highway and the industrial area almost 20 years ago by decision of the Heraklion Prefecture, which wanted to concentrate the Tsingani, who lived in different areas. In the western part live the Chalkidei who do not speak Romani , but communicate in Greek with an accent. They are mainly engaged in the traveling trade, mainly furniture and clothing. The Roma in the eastern area of the camp, whose main occupation is the vegetable trade, have remained stuck with the traditional way of life. They communicate in Romani and have all the characteristics of the Roma. The women wear traditional clothing. The Neas Alikarnassos camp lacks any infrastructure. There is no electricity, no sewage system, and the water supply is imperfect.
The community of Nea Alikarnassos has been rigorously trying to get rid of the unloved residents since 1997. They were denied official registration, prohibited measures to improve living conditions, and prevented their children from attending school; the community even refused financial aid from the EU. Eviction orders were issued several times, but these were challenged in court and could not be enforced. In 2002, in preparation for the 2004 Olympic Games, new attempts were made to evict with the argument that the area was needed for sports facilities. A number of organizations concerned with the protection of human rights became aware. After the prefectural administration initially set about integrating Roma children into the school system, more recently considerations have also been made to improve living conditions.
Economy and Transport
In the area of Nea Alikarnassos is the Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" , the second largest airport in Greece and the one with the largest volume of charter flights.
The municipality also has the industrial area, the Heraklion prison and the infantry cadet reserve officer school (SEAP). The Heraklion Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also located here.
Many of the residents specialize in construction.
