location

Nea Vyssa is located on the Turkish- Greek border about ten kilometers south of the Turkish city of Edirne . Neighboring local communities are Kastanies in the north, Sterna and Kavyli in the west and the municipality of Orestiada in the south.

traffic

railroad

Nea Vyssa train station is located on the historic İstanbul Sirkeci – Svilengrad railway line . Since 1971 there has been a parallel railway line that runs exclusively over Turkish territory and through which international traffic flows between Europe and Turkey. The Nea Vyssa train station is only affected by regional traffic today.

Illegal immigration

The 12.5 kilometer long border section between Nea Vyssa and Kastanies is one of the preferred aisles for illegal immigration to Europe , as it is the only place between Greece and Turkey where the Evros does not form the border with Turkey, but entirely on Turkish Area runs. Refugees do not have to swim across the river here, but can use a bridge. Since November 2010, 175 members of the emergency response teams for border security purposes have been stationed here to guard the border. According to the Greek Ministry of Citizens' Protection, a more than three meter high fence, equipped with thermal imaging cameras and motion detectors , is to be built on the section by April 2011 . In 2011, the construction of a moat began to curb the flow of refugees. In December 2012, the border fence at Evros was completed. The Greek state raised the funds for this itself. Since the fence was completed, the rate of illegal border crossings in the Evros area has fallen to almost 0%.
