Subgroup
In chemistry , subgroups are those groups in the periodic table of chemical elements that belong to the d and f block . The periodic table contains eight main and ten subgroups. All subgroup elements are metals ( transition metals ).
Subgroups of the periodic table are:
- Group 3: Scandium group , 3rd subgroup
- Group 4: titanium group , 4th subgroup
- Group 5: vanadium group , 5th subgroup
- Group 6: chromium group , 6th subgroup
- Group 7: Manganese group , 7th subgroup
- Group 8: iron group , together with cobalt and nickel group 8th subgroup
- Group 9: Cobalt group , together with iron and nickel group, 8th subgroup, but also referred to as 9th subgroup
- Group 10: Nickel group , together with iron and cobalt group, 8th subgroup, but also referred to as 10th subgroup
- Group 11: copper group , 1st subgroup
- Group 12: zinc group , 2nd subgroup
In practice, the lanthanoids and actinides are also counted among the subgroup elements and referred to as “inner transition metals” - in contrast to the d-block elements, which are called “outer transition metals”.
The chemical properties of the elements mainly depend on the external electrons . Since the subgroup elements have one or two outer electrons and the differences lie in the next inner shell , elements of different subgroups are chemically more similar than elements of different main groups.
