Edward M. "Ned" Allan (born August 31, 1875 in Montrose ; † unknown) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Allan, son of a Crimean War veteran, first played in local Montrose football (junior football) at Renown, Albert (two years) and Temperance Athletic (one year, won the Montrose Junior Cup ) before joining FC Montrose in 1892/93 competed in the Northern League . There he formed the defender pair with national player George Bowman , with the club he won the Forfarshire District Charity Cup with a 3-2 win over FC Arbroath . Economic reasons forced him to move to Dundee , about 50 kilometers further south , where he first joined FC Dundee , and for the 1896/97 season he joined the Dundee Wanderers , who also played in the Northern League. There he usually held the position of left defender and rose to become team captain. In January 1898, he was characterized in a newspaper article as a “distinguished gambler” whose “outstanding characteristic is his persistence. He never indulges in rocket-like overtones of ingenuity, but an honest performance can always be relied on. ”In February 1899, he was the captain of Forfarshire in a selection game for the Evening Telegraph Cup between the Forfarshire FA and the Pertshire FA ended in a 3-2 win.

In October 1899 he moved to London to Millwall Athletic in the Southern League . At Millwall he was in the first team from February 1900 and formed almost without exception with Charles Burgess , with whom he had already played at Montrose, the defender pair; With outside runner Arthur Millar another player from Montrose was part of the regular team. Mainly responsible for this collection of players from Montrose was the also from there Millwall trainer, Bob Hunter . While in the Southern League at the end of the season only a midfield position was occupied, the team won the Southern District Combination and reached the semi-finals in the FA Cup . They beat the reigning English champions Aston Villa (who also defended their title at the end of the season) 2-1 in the quarter-finals in the second replay , and in the semifinals they failed 3-0 in the replay against league rivals Southampton FC .

In the summer break of 1900, he moved with his defense colleague Burgess to the north-east English first division club Newcastle United . While Burgess formed the defensive line with Dave Gardner in the course of the 1900/01 season , Allan was only the substitute. He made a total of four premier league appearances, with the team remaining undefeated (2 wins, 2 draws). Allan was not signed beyond the end of the season and returned to Scotland for the 1901/02 season, where he joined Dundee FC . No first-team appearances have been recorded for him in Dundee, and he was probably limited to appearances in the reserve team. At the end of the season he was no longer signed up to Dundee.

In July 1902 he returned with his move to Watford FC back in the Southern League. Allan acted as team captain at Watford, during the second third of the season he had temporarily lost his regular place. At the end of the season Watford had to contest a so-called "test match" to stay in class against Brighton & Hove Albion as the bottom of the table . Allan missed the 3: 5 defeat due to injury, in which a 0: 3 deficit could still be compensated for in the meantime, and the club had to relegate to the second division . When the major division of the Southern League was expanded by two teams for the following season, the places went to Plymouth Argyle and Fulham FC .

Allan returned to Scotland as a result and went back to his civil profession as a mechanic . In November 1903 he was in the crowd at Dens Park for a game between the second team from Dundee and Montrose .

  14. Litster leads Allan in the 1902/03 season as a loan player from Dundee with seven appearances at FC St. Bernard’s . Given Allan's stay in Watford at the time, this is unlikely. A contemporary press article calls Allan playing at St. Bernard's (Edinburgh) a "local player" ( FOOTBALL AND ATHLETIC NOTES . In: Edinburgh Evening News , October 17, 1902, p. 4  ). There are over 90 kilometers between Edinburgh and Dundee or Montrose.
