Neel Kashkari (* the thirtieth July 1973 in Stow , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the US Treasury Department from 2006 to 2009 and was appointed Interim Administrator of the US $ 700 billion rescue fund for US banks on October 6, 2008 . From December 2009 to January 2013 he worked for the investment company PIMCO . In the 2014 gubernatorial election , Kashkari was his party's candidate for governor of California . Since 2016 he has headed one of the central banks in the Federal Reserve System .

Life

Early years

Neel Kashkari's parents, Chaman and Sheila Kashkari, were originally from Kashmir and left India to immigrate to the United States.

Kashkari attended the Stow-Munroe Falls School and the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson , Ohio. After his graduation in 1991 he studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he after his bachelor and his master made in engineering.

Work at TRW

After studying engineering, Kashkari began his work at the space company TRW, now Northrop Grumman Space Development , where he was involved in NASA projects such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the Space Interferometer Mission . He left the company in June 2000 to complete the Wharton School's MBA program .

Work at Goldman, Sachs & Co

With his new degree, Kashkari started at the investment bank Goldman, Sachs & Co , where he looked after companies from Silicon Valley . In July 2006 he became Secretary of State under Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson , whom he already knew from his time at Goldman.

Candidate for governor of California 2014

On January 21, 2014, he declared his intention to run for governor of California . In the primaries on June 3, he was able to prevail against the representative from the California State Assembly Tim Donnelly . According to the new California electoral law, internal party primaries will no longer be held, but all candidates will be voted in a single area code , regardless of party affiliation. In the actual election, the two most successful candidates in the area code then compete against each other. Kashkari secured second place with 19 percent of the total vote, beating Donnelly, his fiercest Republican rival, by around five percentage points. Unlike Donnelly, Kashkari is not supported by the Tea Party movement , but is more of a moderate representative of his party. In the gubernatorial election on November 4, 2014, he was defeated by exactly 40 percent of the vote to the Democratic incumbent Jerry Brown , who was confirmed with 60 percent of the vote. Brown was already clearly in the lead in the primaries with almost 55 percent.

Neel Kashkari has been President of the Federal Reserve Bank Minneapolis since January 1, 2016. He took over from the previous governor Narayana Kocherlakota.
