Neferkare is the maiden name of an ancient Egyptian king ( Pharaoh ) who presumably ruled in the 3rd dynasty . The assignment of the name is controversial in Egyptology and is therefore controversial.

Jürgen von Beckerath and Rainer Hannig equate Neferkare with the Greek name Mesochris or Nebkare, which has been handed down from Manetho (Africanus) and, like Thomas Schneider, see him as the successor to Hudjefa II and Sedjes as well as the predecessor of Huni . But since Mesochris is just another form of the name of Mykerinos, as was shown last, the identification of Neferkare with Mesochris must be deleted. According to a new investigation, Neferkare could be identical to the king known by his Horus name, Chaba.

There is no contemporary evidence for a king named Neferkare. In the list of kings of Abydos , Neferkare is listed as the successor to Sedjes.

Individual evidence

  1. The proper name, as it is introduced from the 4th dynasty with "Sa Ra", does not yet exist at this time, which is why the transfer to proper name (Pharaoh) is basically problematic. The formulation proper name is based on Jürgen von Beckerath : Handbuch der Ägyptischen Könignames .
