The Negros shrew ( Crocidura negrina ) is a shrew from the genus of the white-toothed shrew . It is endemic to the Philippines island of Negros .
features
The Negros shrew reaches a size of 15.5 to 16.7 centimeters. The tail length is 68 to 73 mm and the hind foot length is 73 mm. It looks similar to the musk shrew, but is much smaller, has a longer, slender tail and darker fur. The top and flanks are generally black with a grayish tinge. The underside is dark brown with numerous whitish spots, which are especially visible on the belly.
Occurrence
The Negros shrew lives in rainforests near the Cuemos-Negros volcanoes in the south of the island of Negros at altitudes between 500 and 1,450 m.
Existence and endangerment
The population size of the Negros shrew is unknown. So far only six copies have been collected; the first in 1948, the others in the 1980s. During searches in the area of Mount Kanloan in the northern Negros, the species was not found. The IUCN classifies the Negros shrew in the “endangered” category . The main reason for their rarity is the construction of a geothermal power plant , for which large parts of the distribution area were cleared.
