Mount Talinis , a large stratovolcano complex is also known by the name Magaso and Mount Talinis . It is located in the southeast of the island of Negros near Dumaguete City in the province of Negros Oriental in the Philippines .
geology
The volcanic complex, which rises to a height of 1862 meters, has a base diameter of 36 km, runs in an east-west direction and is irregularly shaped. On its eastern higher side there are two stratovolcanoes and a lava dome , two crater lakes with a diameter of up to 1.5 km, Lake Yagumyum and Lake Nailig. The Casaroro Waterfall, the highest waterfalls in the Central Visayas , is also found on this ridge . The lower western flank of the volcanic complex has four volcanic centers.
The small crater of Magaso is the highest peak of the Cuernos de Negros complex and rises above Dumaguete City . There are fumaroles at the summit , two sulfur springs can be found on the east-south-east mountain flank. A hot spring can be found on the northeastern mountain flank.
The age of the volcanic complex has not yet been determined, the most recent rocks found are 14,000 years old, according to measurements with the radiocarbon method .
Hot volcanic gases have been escaping the volcanic complex since the Great Earthquake of 1902, which is why the volcanic complex is classified as “potentially active”. The Palinpinon geothermal field is located on the north side of the complex south of the Okoy River.
National park
On the northeast flank of the volcanic complex lies the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park , which is home to many endangered species such as the Visayas pustular pig ( Sus cebifrons ), the Prince Alfred deer ( Cervus alfredi ) or the endemic Negros shrew ( Crocidura negrina ).
