Neil Gourley was born in Glasgow where he grew up with a brother. In his youth, before taking up athletics, he played rugby and soccer. In 2014 he started studying mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech in the USA, for whose sports team he competed in the college championships. Since graduating, he has been training with Mark Rowland in Eugene , Oregon .
Athletic career
Gourley first appeared in competitions over the distances of 800 and 1500 meters in 2012. Over 1500 meters he finished eighth in the British U20 championships. In 2014, after moving to the USA, he was able to improve to 3: 48.62 minutes in his first competition. In 2015 he took part in the British U23 championships in summer, where he emerged victorious, and a month later he also started at the U23 European championships in Tallinn. He moved into the final, in which he won the bronze medal with a time of 3: 45.04 minutes. After he was able to improve to a time of 3: 39.92 minutes in 2016, he again took part in the U23 European Championships a year later , this time in Bydgoszcz. There he was able to move into the final again, but in fourth place narrowly missed the podium. In 2019 he took part in the international adult championships for the first time at the European Indoor Championships in his hometown. As the winner of the first heat, he made it to the final straight away, but couldn't start there due to illness. In his first open-air competition in 2019, he was able to increase his personal best in Seattle to 3: 35.95 min. During this time he also met the norm for the World Championships in Doha, where he competed in October. After he was able to successfully contest the preliminary and semi-finals there, he was finally in the World Cup final. In it he ran a time of 3: 37.30 minutes, with which he finished in eleventh and penultimate place.
Gourley has won two British adult titles so far (2019, one indoor and one outdoor).
